Boris Brejcha - Interview

Born in 1981, Boris Brejcha started his musical education in his childhood. He was educated playing drums and keyboard which had been a perfect schooling for the following chapter - producing and performing electronic dance music. A former electronic radio show on Radio RPR MAXIMAL RPR1 piques his curiosity of this new and exciting kind of music that he fell in love with. From this time he began to express his creativity with his computer and with one of the first Cubase versions. Today we offer you an exclusive interview with this German producer. It follows notably the interviews of other famous German producers like Thomas Gold, Extrawelt, M.A.N.D.Y., Thomas Schumacher, Butch or Solee. First, I wanted to thank Boris who answered our questions.

"Hello Boris,

You released some days ago an EP entitled “My name is” with a lot of remixes : 11 to be exact, following the release of your own album last year. How this project was born? Could you please give us more information about it?
> It was just a simple idea for doing this Remixes Album. I know a lot other electronic artists and their style. And i was curious about the idea to see, how my tracks will be, when other artists taking hand on it. Also i wanted to give some new, unknown artists the chance to present themselves. I think a Remix thing is a good way for doing this.

What is your favorite remix and why?
> My favorite Remix is from KANIO. He did a great job. I like his style of producing. Everytime so simple and clean.

More precisely, what will be your next release?
> Actually we are planning a really nice release. I think a lot people know that i did a few tracks in the past called „Die Maschinen...“ (The Machines). This tracks is telling a little story about the war between the humans and the machines. With the next release i will come to an end of this story. A big end. More soon.

To be honest, I’ve discovered your sound recently thanks to Youtube and a live you made in Mexico with your track “Sunday mornings” that has been unreleased apparently. What about it? Do you think you will release it one day? It is so great…
> „Sunday Mornings“ :-) i also like this track. Sure! One day i will release it. But actually there is no date for this track. I have a lot of tracks that are still not released yet. The problem...my label is too slow...haha.

If you look back to 2010, what can you say about it? What is your vision of the couple past months, notably with the release of your own album?
> 2010 was a great year for me...as every year. My third album was definitely my main big thing in this time. Also that i played the first time in Australia and Mexico. It took a long time to find a great contact in Mexico but now i am happy with it. I do not really have any goals i like to reach. I just do my music. All the other things are coming step by step.

Moreover, I’ve looked into your date tour, and apparently you like to mix outside of Germany and especially in America, mainly South. Am I right? Are there specific reasons?
> South America is cool. But there is no specific reason to play there. I remembered that my first DJ gig in my life was in Brazil. Maybe this is the reason why i play there a lot. I also like to play in Germany and in Europe. Actually i have more bookings in Europe than in 2010. That makes me really happy. For me it feels like that Europe is a bit slow with new artists. They don't like to risk so much new things.

After you gave us these info about your music news we would like to go back to your musical roots. Could you briefly tell us how did you become DJ and producer?
> When i was twelve i started to listen to a radio show called „RPR1 Maximal“. It was coming every Saturday 10pm. It was the first show which played electronic music in the radio. That was really crazy for me to hear all of this new electronic sounds. After a while i found out how to make this kind of music and so i started to produce. I produced a lot of trance music for about 10 years just for fun, just for me. In 2004 i changed to minimal, techno music. A friend of mine indicated me this style and i felt in love with it! I knew this will be my style. In 2006 i gave a demo cd to Autist-Records, Berlin. It was my first demo and touch down. :-) That was great. After two releases i was getting my first DJ gig in Brazil in the end of 2006. After this the story was running.

At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved along the years?
> In the beginning they did not understand it. But for me it was ok. Music is my life. This was my only goal when i was young. Be an electronic musician. Today my family is happy with me and my situation. Now they understand that if you work hard for it, it can be like a „normal“ job. In another way.

In some videos, we can see you mixing with a mask? Why? Is it a Daft Punk inspiration?
> That's right. On some Open Air Festivals i was using masks. But actually i try to cancel this because for me it was only a joke in the beginning when i played the first time in Brazil. After using the mask a couple of times everybody was asking me to play with the mask. But i think this is not really me. I like more to play as Boris, without the mask and with just fresh, new music. The other thing is...it is definitely toooooo hot under this kind of masks for me.

How would you describe the German scene of electronic music from your point of view?
> For me this is a hard question. I am from Germany but i am not so much into the electronic scene. I know that the main scene is in Berlin. Everybody is talking about Berlin...Berlin. A lot of musicians are living there and actual the German music scene DJ's are playing too much House music for me. I really cannot get this style of sound. I don't like, when there is a short vocal loop playing the whole 6 minutes in the track. This music is not really an inspiration for me. I can say...i hate this. I also don't like to hear so much music from other producers. Not because i don't like it. I think it is not really helpful for my sound to have too much influences. Keep things away to get a better sound.

Are there are one or two German artists you would like to introduce us?
> Mhh....there is one Artist i like to introduce. His name is Niko Schwind. He started near in the same time as me (2006). We started on the same Label. Autist-Records, Berlin. For me he is doing a great job and also great music. You need to listen to him.

Boris the interview will be published on a website mainly read by French people. So, what do you know about the French electronic music scene? Are there some artists that you personally know or especially love their music?
> :-) I know nothing about the German scene and now France. :-) That's funny! Oh....but i know a nice Dj and Producer from Paris. His name is Rafael Murillo. A few weeks ago he asked me to produce a Remix of one of his tracks and yes, i did it. We will release this EP on a label based in France. Popcorn Records. I think that will be a good one.

Besides music, what are your hobbies?
> I play soccer, go swimming and i like to work with the programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash. And some Video Programs. I was programming my own website for example. I also did all the videos on my Youtube channel. For me it a great hobby besides the music production and djing. Going to the cinema is also a big hobby for me. I think you need to watch good films on a big screen with a nice sound.

Is there anything you would like to add?
> Yes. I hope to come back soon to France.

Boris, before we conclude this interview we have a few more questions to better know you. Sometimes one word is enough!

The track you advice us to listen to in your discography?
> „Brainstopper“ :-) One of my all time favorites.

An artist you would like to work with one day?
> Let me think. Richie Hawtin would be great.

3 words to define your music?
> There are only two words. High-tech, minimal.

Are you using vinyl or mp3 for your mix?
> Nothing of this. I use WAV Files on CD´s. Sometimes i play also live. For this i use Ableton and the AKAI MPC40.

The software you use to produce?
> Cubase 6

One word about France?
> Nice Country :-) Nice party people.

One privilege, being DJ, gives you access to?
> Mhh...I got every time some space on the guest list for my friends, a lot of drinks and so on...

The first track of your mix here (I want to buy it…)?
> The track is called „Der Alchemyst“. Sorry. This track is also not released yet.

Your favorite track these days?
> One track of mine.

Some words about the website I manage: Actualités Electroniques?
> I like your website and the idea to give a platform for the electronic music scene.

Boris, thank you very, very much for the time you devoted to Actualités Electroniques and particularly for this full and exclusive interview. We will wait for sure for your next productions. We hope to see you soon in France too. A bientôt!
> Thanks you.
