Thyladomid - Interview

Thyladomid is a 25 Year old German producer and DJ. He was born in Cologne into a musical family and began learning piano at the age of 5 years. His first impressions of Club Culture started in 2006 when he had the opportunity to accompany a well-known DJ. Infected, he decided to invest all the money he managed to earn into buying production equipment. All his time and energy went into producing electronic music and achieved within a short period a professional level. In 2007 the project Thyladomid was born and in the same year Charles Thiemann alias Thyladomid had his first digital release and made his first DJ appearance in a club in Neuss. Since then the name Thyladomid became widely known in the region. This interview follows notably the one of other German producers we interviewed like Fritz Kalkbrenner, Thomas Schumacher, Wankelmut or M.A.N.D.Y. to name a few. First of all, I would like to thank Thyladomid who answered our questions with enthusiasm. Have a good reading!

“Hi Charles,

Honestly, it's a real pleasure and honor to interview you, because I discovered your music some years ago with your track “The voice” released around 2010 at the beginning of your career. So, I was really impatient to listen to your new release “The Real Thing” for Diynamic Music, the main reason for this interview!

Indeed, in a few weeks you will release your new EP with remixes of Adriatique and Stimming that I interviewed few months ago too. Could you briefly tell us more about this EP?
> My Pleasure. This EP is quite an odd release for Diynamic. First of all it is actually a song with two completely different remixes on top. Nothing for the dancefloor really. It’s more of a listen for special moments. The remixes are totally dancefloor-y. I was a little skeptic to send out the demo to Solomun at first, because it is so different to all other releases so far. But I was very surprised when he decided to release a single before the upcoming album.

How went the collaboration with these two great producers, and the Swiss duo Adriatique notably with whom you already worked previously with, for a remix of Chris Isaac? Did you hesitate with other artists of the imprint like HOSH or David August?
> I worked very close with the Diynamic crew and we all decided that a Stimming and Adriatique remix would fit best into it. But actually I could imagine every single Diynamic artist doing a remix of this track.

Speaking about Adriatique I read that together you set up a new music project with a first release on Solomun’s 2DIY4 label? Could you please tell us more?
> Yes that was the beginning of our collaboration. We started to do music together in late 2010 and had releases on Culprit, OFF Recordings and Diynamic Music. It was a great time and I think there will be more stuff coming, possibly next year.

Do you already know about your upcoming releases? What will it be?
> ”The Real Thing” is a single out of my upcoming Album I will release on Diynamic later this year. It is very quiet and something you listen to at home. A lot of very song based tracks on it. I just finished it.

After you give us this info about your music news we would like to go back to your musical roots. Could you briefly tell us how did you become DJ and producer?
> I play the piano now for about 15 years. When I was a teenager I started to listen to more commercial stuff like Ferry Corsten or Discoboys at that time. I went out to clubs with friends and I discovered electronic music for myself. I immediately started producing before even knowing how DJ’ing works. I worked with Fruity Loops for about 3 years and bought myself turntables to learn how to DJ.

At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved?
> It was difficult in the beginning. But after some time they realized that I wouldn’t change my passion and started supporting me. I’m very happy that they understand what I am doing.

More and more people are asking us about the material DJs and producers used. What is the software or instruments you use to produce and create a track? I think I’ve read somewhere you use Fruity Loops. Could you please be more specific on a technical side let’s say?
> I work with Logic X now for about 3 years. I started with Fruity Loops, but I discovered a lot of barriers in this DAW. Additionally I use a Piano and some Synthesizers from Nord.

Previously I said I became fan of your music because of your release “The voice” released on the label of Andre Crom, Off Recordings. Is there anything special that you can say about this track, maybe about how it is born, the way you created it? Can we consider it like a turn in your career?
> It was the beginning of everything. I have never expected so much attention after this release. It was done in one day and I thought it would be good on Andre’s label. So I send it out to him and he wanted it on various artists EP on OFF Spin. I was super happy about that. But what happened after the release was just crazy.

Knowing that you come from Germany, could you please tell us a bit more about the German electronic scene, well-known for its creative and lively scene? Are there some upcoming artists, DJs or producers to follow besides of you?
> The German scene is very much cut in half. You have more commercial areas and totally underground regions. Berlin is probably the best city for electronic music. It is a crazy place with a lot of creative innovative people. You are able to do a lot in Berlin. The government tolerates it. In south and West Germany for example it is the complete opposite. You cannot just set up a free open air in Düsseldorf without paying high fees. But what I like most is my residency in Raum38 in Mönchengladbach at Kunstgeschwister. We are a team of 6 people setting up parties and Open Airs in this Region.

Thyladomid, before we conclude this interview we have a few more questions. Sometimes one word is enough!

Where are you right now for answering our interview? Studio, airport?
> Les Issambres, South France.

The song you advices us to listen in your discography?
> Thyladomid ft. Mahfoud – The real thing

An artist you would like to work with one day?
> Son Lux.

One privilege, being DJs, gives you access to?
> I’m able to reach a lot of people with my music.

One word about France?
> Lovely!!

Some words about our website, the one where the interview will be published?
> Interesting.

The best club in Germany (name of the nightclub and city)?
> Raum38, Mönchengladbach.

Your favorite track these days?
> Kollektiv Turmstrasse – Last day (David August Remix)

Thyladomid, thank you so much for the time you devoted to Actualités Electroniques and particularly for this full and exclusive interview. We will wait for sure for your next productions and especially your tour dates. A bientôt!”
