Superpitcher - Interview

Superpitcher grew up in the south of Germany, alone and lonely. He started to collect music at 16, seduced by the soft sounds of Prefab Sprout, Scritti Politti, and Roxy Music. A decade later he found himself working in the distribution department of KOMPAKT and found new heroes – Wolfgang Voigt, Chain Reaction, Joerg Burger and Air Liquide – men that linked his sonic youth and adult aspirations. Following the release of his landmark 2001 single, “Heroin” he gave up work, deciding to forge a new nocturnal lifestyle, increasing his DJing, steadied his socializing and worked on perfecting his studio production skills – nothing less than engulfing electronic pop and shimmering, glimmering techno.... Today, we have the chance to offer you an exclusive interview with this German producer. It followed notably the interviews of other famous German producers like Marc Romboy, Extrawelt, M.A.N.D.Y., Thomas Schumacher, Butch ou encore Solee. First, I wanted to thank Aksel who answered our questions.

"Hello Aksel,

Some days ago you released a new track on the fantastic compilation Total Kompakt 12, with a wonderful track entitled "White Lightening". It’s your first track since your album "Kilimanjaro" released in September 2010. Could you please give us more info about this new release?
> It’s always quite a challenge to start again after a big project like an album. Kind of really empty, emotionally and mentally but also full of new ideas. It´s very likely to think way too much in this state of mind. So the main challenge for “White Lightning” was to think the least as possible and that was really hard work…

Why did you stay so silenced since September 2010? Maybe you focus your energy on your imprint and your tour?
> Besides being really out of energy there was a lot of touring in these months. I also started to work on new material and on a new project with Mexican producer Rebolledo (Cómeme), called Pachanga Boys. Watch out for that!

More precisely, do you already know what will be your next release?
> There is gonna be a new label called “Hippie Dance” run by Rebolledo and myself which will have it’s first release end of September. It’s gonna be a limited collectors Vinyl edition of 300 copies maximum with mostly our music and music of friends. It will be exclusively sold at Kompakt.fm. For the love of Vinyl! An album by Pachanga Boys will be probably released early 2012. I´m planning to do some releases of special Kilimanjaro Versions and Remixes from friends every now and then…

After you give us these info about your music news we would like to go back to your musical roots. Could you briefly tell us how did you become DJ and producer?
> Everything was just happening naturally, I don´t believe in pushing or trying too hard. I fell in love with music at one point and I was lucky enough to find out ways to express myself through music with the help of an Atari a Sampler and a Tape Machine. Of course that was a long process and a lot of work and struggle sometimes. At one point I found out that other people also enjoyed what I did and that was when I knew that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. True love!

The Djing came later and was a big surprise to me. I did play records in little bars sometimes but didn’t really think of it as a professional line of work. But, out of boredom some friends and I started to organize little parties from time to time and suddenly I got drunk with Michael Mayer and Tobias Thomas on one of their first Total Confusion Parties in Cologne and they asked me to play. And I just did and it was so great and I never stopped…

At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved along the years?
> They didn’t really know what I did and I still had other jobs, like some social work, showing movies, working in the recordshop… Now my mother is really proud and happy, impressed about my crazy traveling and she says that she likes my music. Saying wonderful things like “I didn’t know you could sing”

Are there one or two German artists you would like to introduce us, and who are maybe very well-known from a large audience?
> Klaus Kinski and Georg Baselitz

I remembered well some of your tracks that you produced around 2004. There were “Baby's On Fire” but there was also the fantastic EP “Happiness Remixes” that I have on a vinyl version with the 2 excellent remixes of your friend Michael Mayer and Lawrence. What did you remember about this track?
> There is so much attached to this, good and bad, beautiful and sad and I remember everything…

Are you nostalgic of this period?
> No.

Aksel, the interview will be published on a website mainly read by French people. So, what do you know about the French electronic music scene? Are there some artists that you personally know or especially love their music?
> I´m in Paris right now but I think I know more about the French movie scene…

Besides music, what are your hobbies?
> Watching movies and drinking wine.

Aksel, before we conclude this interview we have a few more questions. Sometimes one word is enough!

The track you advice us to listen to in your discography?
> Dntel “ This is the dream of Evan and Chan” Superpitcher Remix

An artist you would like to work with one day?
> Yves Saint Laurent

3 words to define your music?
> Love, Love, Love.

Are you using vinyl or mp3 for your mix?
> Vinyl

The software you use to produce?
>I don’t like to talk about my tools

One privilege, being DJ, gives you access to?
>Nothing

Your favorite track these days?
> Ada “Happy Birthday”

Some words about the website I manage: Actualités Electroniques?
> Sorry I’m offline!

Aksel, thank you very, very much for the time you devoted to Actualités Electroniques and particularly for this full and exclusive interview. We will wait for sure for your next productions. A bientôt!
> Thanks a Lot,
Aksel”
