Klasse Recordings third release, “Heaven and Hell EP” from Luca Lozano, showcases the talents of label coowner and creative director. The EP's title hints at the Producer’s obsession with opposites, clarity and contrast. Heaven and Hell, life and death; cycles, patterns and parallels emerging as repeated themes within Luca's music. “Heaven and Hell” is a slow and steady number that incorporates a very familiar funk sample and builds an intriguing scene around it. This EP will be out as vinyl edition first on 14th Dec 2010 and then as digital version only on 12th Jan 2011, in download platforms like Decks and Believe.

The first track’s fresh disco feels replete with handclaps and a powerful bassline shuffle along together and add dimension to the chunky groove. The song culminates in a refreshing organ breakdown that is reminiscent of the vibe found within many early 90's hip-hop tracks. As the reworked melody rises and rises it increases in energy until it explodes back into itself, causing dance-floor ecstasy and smiling faces all around! Perfect as a track for a warm-up session, it uses the vocal of a very well-known track, but I can’t remember which one! Maybe you will….
The EP's second track, “Got it Together” is more upbeat and hits a little harder than the previous one, in a techno style: taking its lead from a 'beastlie' sample that listeners are sure to remember with fondness. The song builds and builds until it collides with a thunderous and groovy bassline that provides a pay-off to the near sacrosanct crescendo that came before it.
Munich and Berlin based act Penner & Muder take on the task of remixing “Heaven and Hell” and work out a much darker and broodier version. Heavyweight kick drums and filtered FX provide the foreground whilst the ghostly vocal phrases repeat subtly in the background. The slowed-down tempo and sexed-up energy of this remix make for an unforgettable atmosphere. Get up and dance!
At the end, David Keno's take on “Got it Together” is a simplified and stripped down affair, using his knowledge of what works in the club he whittles the track down to its most impressive parts. Crisp drum hits and a warm fuzzy bassline cavort with organ pads and FX, rising and falling in a more casual manner than the original, giving him a catchy strength.
For sure, the first track and the remix of David Keno are the best tracks of the EP. Definitely 2 tracks I will play in my next sets. And you too I hope!
