Wankelmut - Interview

Sometimes things unfold fast, very fast. In autumn 2011 Jacob Dilßner aka Wankelmut was a young 24-year old student and part-time dj who had just relocated to his hometown Berlin to study philosophy and political science. Then one night he started playing around with one of his favourite songs in Ableton Live, cutting, filtering and adding a simple 4/4 groove until Asaf Avidan & The Mojos’ bitter-sweet folk song „One Day/Reckoning Song“ turned into what has now become one of house music’s biggest anthems of 2012. But back then, Jacob was totally unaware of the impact his groundbreaking remix would have. Today we have the chance to interview the hottest producer of the moment in Europe. The interview followed notably the ones of other famous producers like Marc Romboy, Da Fresh, Umek, Avicii or Dr. Kucho. First, I wanted to thank Jacob who answered our questions despite a full agenda, such as Get Physical/Modernsoul who got us this exclusive interview.

"Hello Jacob,

Honestly, it's a real pleasure and honor to interview you, because I didn’t know you at all some weeks ago but I had the chance to discover your music because I moved to Switzerland and here we can’t miss your music and especially one of your track! We will get back on this later on.

Some days ago thanks to Get Physical and Poesie Musik has been released Wankelmoods Vol. 1, with an opening track of Raz Ohara remixed Acid Pauli's “El Zahir”, that is just amazing. How did you do your selection? Could you please be more specific about it?
> The Selection was made to give an insight into my DJ Sets and to create an entertaining Mix within the 80 mins CD length. I offer an electronic music journey with tracks I like in a way as I play them in the clubs every weekend.

Some days ago you posted on your Soundcloud the following track Gossip - Get a Job (Wankelmut Remix). Could you please clarify us how did you chose to remix this or that track especially? Is it just a question of feeling?
> In that case I was approached by Gossip’s record company Sony Music to do this remix. It was an honour for me to remix such an inspiring group like Gossip. I quite like the track and I think it makes sense in its remixed form too. Apart from that there is no rule or regulation for a remix – if I like the track and the people behind it I try to do it – like for Oliver Schories or Jay Haze more recently.

2012 is almost over. If you look back to it, what can you say about it? What is your vision of the couple past months, dominated by one track? I learnt you stop your studies. So everything changed?
> A lot of things entered my life and changed a lot of aspects of my life with the “One Day” Track. I managed to survive so far. Certain aspects like booking get handled by real professionals so I can focus on being a DJ and Producer/Remixer who tries to entertain his listeners. Of course a lot of new things came into my life quite fast when “One day” went to No.1 in eight European countries. Overall I am very happy with all the developments.

After you give us these info about your music news we would like to go back to your musical roots. Could you briefly tell us how did you become producer?
> I worked with Ableton Live for quite some time now mainly learning the process and creating stuff for my own. Recently I added Logic Pro which is like a whole new world with a lot of possibilities and new features.

Related to the previous question, what are your musical influences concerning the music you produced?
> Rock music & Indie music are my main influences. I still have a lot of guitar riffs in my mind while working on a track.

At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved this?
> My family loves and respects what I do.

Well, as you can imagine we would like to get back to „One Day/Reckoning Song“. This is not the heart of the interview, but we can’t miss it. At the beginning, why this track ? Is there a specific reason to play with it in Ableton?
> I was introduced to it by a friend and listened to the track instantly during an USA road trip. Coming back from the States I sampled the vocal and guitar parts one night just to generate a DJ Tool for myself. It was a simple and natural development without any intentions behind it. I just really liked that deep and emotional unique vocal.

This track uses an original vocal of another track. So how did you clear the sample and was it difficult? I can imagine that at the beginning when you publish it on your Soundcloud the track was not cleared.
> Actually it was not a sample clearing process because at the end it became the official remix for Asaf Avidan’s “Reckoning Song” with the additional title “One Day”. Asaf’s record label Four Music / Sony Music released it. It took quite some time to involve all rights holders and find a legal way to release it.

More and more people are asking us about the material DJs and producers used. What is the software or instruments you used to producer and create a track? We already said you used Ableton Live for “One Day”. Could you please be more specific on a technical side?
> I use Ableton Live in combination with Logic Pro. Additionally I work with a great mastering engineer who does a fantastic job to finish and round up the production.

Concerning the place where you lived, Berlin, could you please tell us what is specific concerning this city? All the main artists of electronic music, especially for minimal and techno movements are in Berlin. Why? Do you have some explanations? Some days ago we interviewed Fritz Kalkbrenner and he told us it was a city with limitless opportunities. What about your point of view, as Berlin is also your hometown?
> A lot of artists, DJs, labels, clubs and lovers of electronic create this vibe surrounding Berlin. It’s not really something new because Berlin has the attention for a couple of years now but the special feeling is still there and very strong.

We can say you already hit the ceiling of the electronic music. What can you except for the future? More what? What are your new dreams?
> I want to entertain people with my DJiing and I want to release quality music as a producer and remixer.

The interview will be published on a website mainly read by French people. So, what do you know about the French electronic music scene? Are there some artists that you personally know or especially love their music?
> Laurent Garnier was one of the first persons who asked me about “One Day” after he discovered it at my Soundcloud almost a year ago. Of course there is a strong interest in French electronic music especially after I hade the chance to play a couple of gigs in France and received a warm welcome. Beside Laurent I really like the work of people like Jef K, Vitalic, D’Julz or Jennifer Cardini just to mention a few.

Jacob, before we conclude this interview we have a few more questions. Sometimes one word is enough!

The track you advice us to listen to in your (short) discography?
> Jay Haze - Soul in a Bottle (Wankelmut Remix)

An artist you would like to work with one day?
> Neil Young.

Best place to go out in Berlin?
> Sisyphos & Watergate.

One word about France?
> GREAT!

Your favorite track these days?
> Tiefschwarz – Hurriance feat. Jaw (Re.you Remix)

Jacob thank you very very much for the time you devoted to Actualités Electroniques and particularly for this full and exclusive interview. We will wait for sure for your next productions and your new compilation. I’m sure you’ll have a bright future!”
