Gui Boratto - Interview

Born in 1974 in São Paulo Brazil, Gui Boratto, architect, musician, composer and producer initiated his career in the advertising sector in 1993. From 1994 until 2004 he performed various works for countless record labels both national and international, such as EMI, Virgin, Irma, BMG, Edel, Vidisco, ZYX, among others. Today, we have the chance to offer you an exclusive interview with this Brazilian producer as he will release soon his new solo album “III” in a few days under Kompakt Records. It followed notably the interviews of other famous producers like Marc Romboy, Da Fresh, Umek, Avicii or Dr. Kucho. First, I wanted to thank Gui who answered our questions.

"Hello Gui,

Honestly it’s a real honor to interview you, because you are simply for me in my top 10 of the best producers of the world! As simple as that! I think I’ve almost listened to all of your tracks and there are so much great productions. One of my favorite is “No Turning back”, but there are also your fantastic “Atomic Soda” and “Arquipelago”.

A few days ago you played at Showcase in Paris for your European tour. You’ve already played last year in this club, I was there and it was just fantastic. You played so many great tracks of your discography. It was a real pleasure. Did you remember this party? Is there something special about the French audience?
> I really loved that gig. To be honest, the French people are my biggest audience in Europe. I simply adore playing to them. They scream, they are loud and happy! It’s amazing how the reactions appear in front of me.

Is it more a live or a set? For instance we interviewed some days ago Marc Romboy and Stephan Bodzin, and they are apparently improvising a lot for their live Luna tour. What about you? Did you play always the same tracks in the same order?
> It’s a live. I always improvise. I wouldn’t be happy to press a button and leave it play automatically.
The fun part is the changes that suddenly happen live.

Some weeks ago, you released you new EP “The Drill” under Kompakt Recordings. Is it the first extract of your new album?
> Yes. I’m very excited to release something totally new, despite remixes of course. It’s great to show some new music to my fans.

Indeed, I saw that in September you will release your new solo album entitled “III”, 2 years after the crazy “Take my breath away”. Could you please tell us a bit more about it? How this project was born? Is there any exclusive news that you can share with us?
> Well, the process doing my new third album was similar then Chromophobia and TMBA albums. But I think “III” is darker then the others. But of course, it has a wide variety of moods and atmospheres, like the others.

After you give us these infos about your music news we would like to go back to your musical roots. Could you briefly tell us how did you become DJ and producer? Can we say that your brother was the one who converted you to music, as he was a pioneer of electronic music in your family?
> Not at all. I’m a musician. I guess, because of my mother, I’m involved on music nowadays. But I’m also an architect, which influenced me a lot.

At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved along the years?
> My father always pushed me to do whatever I’ve wanted. But I was afraid to follow the music career.  That’s why I’ve decided to do architecture and have music as a hobby. But after graduating, I kept doing music, my real first passion.

I saw some of your live pictures and you were playing guitar. It appears to be your favorite instrument since your childhood. Am I right? What is your relationship with this instrument and what is his influence in your production works?
> I play guitar and piano, my first instrument. Both have a main relation on how I compose and do most of the arrangements of my songs.

Are there one or two Brazilian artists you would like to introduce us, that has maybe been signed under your imprint recently or that you would like to sign?
> My imprint doesn’t exist anymore, but I can say that “Dubshape” and “Dada Attack” are the ones to look out from my country. Of course there’s others like Gabe, Clickbox, among others.

Gui, the interview will be published on a website mainly read by French people. So, what do you know about the French electronic music scene? Are there some artists that you personally know or especially love their music?
> I really like guys like Air, Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier… there’s so many amazing French talents. Hard to list them all. But I’m a huge fan of Michel Legrand and Charles Aznavour.

Besides music, what are your hobbies?
> Play poker, snooker and fishing.

Gui, before we conclude this interview we have a few more questions. Sometimes one word is enough!

The track you advice us to listen to in your discography?
> “Arquipélago”, “Beautiful Life”, “Besides” and “Galuchat”, from my new “III” album, which is the opening track.

An artist you would like to work with one day?
> George Benson, David Bowie, Ian McCulloch, Martin Gore.

3 words to define your music?
> Slow, Melodic, Techno

Are you using vinyl or mp3 for your mix?
> Machines, machines, machines…

The software you use to produce?
> Logic, always.

One word about France?
> Chic

One privilege, being DJ, gives you access to?
> Know lots of places from this planet.

Your favorite track these days?
> “Call Me Irresponsible”, composed by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn.

Some words about the website I manage: Actualités Electroniques?
> Very nice and clean website. Great and up-to-date articles. I recommend.

Gui, thank you very, very much for the time you devoted to Actualités Electroniques and particularly for this full and exclusive interview. We will wait for sure for your upcoming album. It’s gonna be hot. A bientôt!”
