Rebolledo - Interview

A few days ago, I was reading an article about Superpitcher, in which he talked about Rebolledo as the man of the moment! So I decided to contact Kompakt Recordings in order to obtain an exclusive interview with the Mexican DJ and producer, part of the Comeme crew. He likes eclectic, so do we. Please welcome the man who has notably released tracks on Kompakt Recordings and Turbo Recordings. This interview follows others like the one Fedde le Grand, M.A.N.D.Y. and Troy Pierce. First of all, I would like to thank Rebolledo who answered our questions and Kompakt Recordings. Muchas gracias para todo Rebolledo. Have a good reading!

 “Hello Rebolledo,

I’ve seen that recently you have been collaborating with Superpitcher as Pachanga Boys and with Pitch and Jörg Burger under the name The Three Lions. It gave birth to two projects, the tracks “Power” and “You’ll Win Again”, released on Kompakt’s Total 11 compilation. Could you please be more specific about these projects?
> Well, with Aksel (Superpitcher), I´ve been working for a little more than a year, and the project was born almost by accident, nothing was planned. As we are very good friends, when I go to Europe I stay with him in Cologne,  in one of this visits he heard me singing in the shower and kind of liked it, so he asked me to sing for one of his tracks, we went to the studio and started working on it, in a break we had he started testing a new instrument and a nice little melody came out… then I started to sing in Spanish on top, next thing we knew we were recording it and finished the track  (Fiesta Forever on Kompakt Total 10), and Pachanga Boys were born.  After that we´ve been working on new material, which we have almost ready in order to release a very nice EP.
> About the three lions, again was a very natural thing, this time Jörg and Aksel had been working on a track and they invited me to join to finish it. After You win again, Jörg and I started working on new ideas for The Three Lions, but we´re taking our time, because it´s not easy to be all three at the same time with our individual calendars going on.

For 2011, what we expect from you? An album? New tracks as solo or duo? A compilation maybe? Indeed, I’ve read you were working on a first solo album. What about it?
> Yes, right now I just moved back to the city where I was born, Xalapa to be as relaxed as possible. I set up a nice studio where I´m working on my album which is gonna be released in early June on Cómeme (the label´s first Long Play). It´s a solo album but in some tracks I have some collaborations which give it a great colour. Also I hope we can have our Pachanga Boys Ep ready soon.

Concerning the music you’ve done along the years since 2002, which track did you think help you to win credibility and opened you some doors?
>Well, actually, in 2002 I started Djing but not producing, I was very focused on that and producing music came as a result of not finding the right music to complete my dj sets… so I decided to do it on my own. Matias Aguayo was very supportive when I showed him my rough ideas which he called “Caveman Disco”, jajaj. Then the first track I ever finished was actually “Pitaya Frenesí”, which was the one that triggered everything and was very well accepted.

After this first part about your music, literally speaking, we would like to get back to your origins. Could you please tell us in a few words, how did you become a DJ and producer, notably before you became resident @ Santanera in Playa del Carmen (Mexico).
> Well, I used to live in Monterrey when I was studying Industrial design around year 2000. I used to go out every weekend to listen to dj´s (back then I didn´t even know what they were doing back there with those machines… jejej), I loved to dance all night long and always liked to imagine other ways to put the music together, or ways to create different dancefloor moments… so then I reached a point when dancing and imagining wasn´t enough so I decided to give it a try as a hobby. In Monterrey was pretty hard to find gigs, also because I played very different from the rest and not everybody wanted to hear new things… I was about to quit when I got a chance to play at La Santanera, they liked it right away and asked me to play for them, that was a big breakthrough for me. Then as I told you, djing was not enough and in order to create the dancefloor moments I had in my mind, I decided to give it a try doing my own music around year 2008.

As you come from Mexico, could you please tell us if there are one or two Mexican artists you would like to introduce us today?
> Well, my favorite one at the moment is my label mate Daniel Maloso, with which I´ve done some collaborations and who´s about to release his first solo EP on Cómeme, which I tell you… is totally amazing.
> Also there are cool bands like “Quiero Club” who have a very fresh sound, great Djs like Tato Cado, and a couple of super young producers from Monterrey who are making a total new sound which they call “Guaracha Tribal”, they are DJ Otto, Erick Rincón and Sheeko beat.  They are about 17 years old and they are just great.

For European, Mexican electronic scene is not very well-known. How could you describe it in a few words?
> Well it´s a little bit dispersed, since the country is kind of big and the cities where the things are happening are quite far away from each other… but it´s a nice scene. Over the last years we´ve developed a nice network of venues and artists in the main cities. Not everything is happening in Mexico City only as it used to be, now there´s La Santanera doing great stuff in Playa del Carmen, cool promoters and clubs in Guadalajara, and me with some friends opened a little place in Monterrey called TOPAZ deluxe, where we host great parties and play great music and show great talent.

Moreover Mauricio, what did you know about the French electronic music scene? Are there some artists that you know? You particularly love their works? I’m asking you this question because I know you are friend with the Chilian Matias Aguayo, and he now live in the suburbs of Paris.
>Well yes, Matias lived in Paris for a while (he just moved back to Germany), and I visited him there a lot, but I never really got into the French scene and get to really know it. I just got to know Siskid who ask me to do a remix for him, and who´s a lovely guy. But besides that… I didn´t get involved at all.

Before we conclude this interview, is there anything you would like to add?
>Well, I would like to invite everyone to be aware of what´s about to come on Cómeme (our label). In 2010 we focused more on promoting it by touring and on finding new talents and developing our sound , reason why we only had a couple of releases, but for 2011 we have really great new stuff coming up. A lot of new super fresh music.

Some words to our Spanish speakers? (In Spanish)
