Our two French friends that are Philippe Zdar and Boom Bass aka Cassius, left us hungry with their album "15 Again". It was released in 2006 and realized in a few weeks in Ibiza. It ended with a track using the voice of Pharrell Williams! That was already more than three years ago. Just as a reminder there was too, the famous track "Toop toop", with a frenzied guitar riff. Lately, one of the duets flagship of the French electronic scene was very busy because of the collaboration with another emblematic group of the French Touch: Phoenix. They had indeed released a few months ago the album "Wolfgang Amadeus", that we reviewed.
Despite this workload, a few days ago, Cassius has released a new LP, a bit different from what we had heard so far. The 2 main tracks that lead the maxi is resolutely more trash than their previous productions. The sound is fairly saturated and jerky.
The female voice on the track "Youth, speed, disorder, cigarette" offers us a panting and rhythmic chorus. The rest, according to me is rather simple but worked well. It was a strong bias for the duo. I hope nevertheless that Zdar will soon took back his microphone to give us other new productions in the spirit of "Jackrock" (from "15 Again") on which he sang previously.
Another excerpt from this vinyl is in the same vein as the first track. It is a cover of David Crosby "Almost Cut My Hair". This track uses the same construction as the saturated and jerky "Youth, speed, disorder, cigarette" song. It is a little more accessible thanks to its close vocal production of the Cassius’ album "15 Again".
Finally, these tracks foreshadow the release of their next album that will be in September. We hope to have occasion to review it on Actualites Electroniques, in the upcoming weeks.
On the video clip that has been broadcasted on the Internet, beware, because it is not the official one. It is simply some scenes taken from the movie "Gummo" shot in 1997 that is about the adventures of a character in Nashville (U.S.A.) after a tornado!
