It is primarily as a DJ that Benoît B. comes to the music and especially house music. He trained himself wherever he found turntables, in the bars of Paris with the collective Sound Session, inspired by Lil' Louis and Cajmere. Previously he had the chance to play at Folies Pigalle, Batofar, Rex and the Elysée Montmartre. Today, we have the chance to review his first EP "Night moves" evolving in a deep and groovy atmosphere that showcases sampled vocals. Finally, here is a big thanks to the Agency, HIM Media that has shared with us this excellent musical discovery, released earlier this week on the label Midnight Trouble/Believe.
Since 4 years Benoît B. produces his own music, a logical consequence of the years as a DJ: the desire to create his sounds himself, especially for testing during sets, directly facing the public. As a good vinyl digger, he finally seriously looked more at funk and disco sounds and finds himself marked by the production of labels like Salsoul, Prelude and West End. His DJ experience and passion for disc format created him as a producer, a mixture of the past and present. Like a game he wants to share with Deetron or Gerd.
His first EP "Night Moves" is cut for the clubs. Both deep and dynamic "Night Moves", "Hello", "Treat Her Right" and "New Coming" temper their happy 90's side by harder rhythms.
More especially "Night moves" uses the well-known sample of "In the beginning there was Jack" cleverly included in a fairly linear and deep melody at the start that then accelerates slowly. A great track to start a set with.
The second title, more rhythmic with the first notes, a bit like tracks of Diynamic Music, with a female voice, has certain energy. This is clearly the best track of the EP. We just regret that the speech is defined around short samples, whereas it could have been used with longer extracts to bring the track in a far more powerful dimension.
In line with the previous two tracks, “Treat Her Right” evolves again in a deep atmosphere still using a famous sampled voice "Check this house". The melody remembers me so of the tracks at the beginnings of Detroit and Chicago techno movement in the early 90’s.
Finally, the EP ends with a more nervous production, “New Coming” with a slightly more acid ambiance, spiced with atmospheric rhythms to conclude this EP in a techno style. What’s new here ? No sampled voice for once!
A great surprise to listen to without moderation.
