83 years is the age of the pope or the Baron of the original electronic music. Maybe you will think it is a crazy article! Well, you're not so wrong. Indeed, Pierre Henry who is 83, is considered by many as the father of electronic music and the founder of concrete music. Visiting the Paris area for a few days at the Center Arts of Enghien Les Bains, here's a glimpse of an unknown artist to many.
For those who have never heard anything of this funny man please listen the two following tracks before reading the article!
Pierre Henry is neither more nor less the inventor of the techno movement. He is the ancestor of the DJs, the precursor of the remix, which has created his own sound language almost 60 years ago! This February 6 at the Center for the Arts in Val D'Oise, this man will present a unpublished montage of his music that covers his works. This self-portrait composed includes "Symphony for a single man" (1950) and "Orpheus" (1951), which appears as UFO music tracks, especially when you realize that the music was composed just after the World War 2.
For instance he wrote in the 1950’s his thoughts: "We must immediately take a direction that leads to a pure organic music. At this point of view, the music was far less than poetry or painting. Music has not yet dared to destroy its own life.”
Known particularly for his music that has been used in some performances of the French choreographer Maurice Béjart, his creations are out of the ordinary. Adept of crushing he manipulated and mixed sounds to push them to extreme, which often gives us a big surprise result and a wonderful one.
Difficult to categorize between electronic music and electroacoustic music, the artist himself cant’ describe his own music, which could maybe compared to experimental music. Finally, most would just say that it is "the music of Pierre Henry”. The sounds he uses are inspired by nature and animals.
Genius of its kind, Pierre Henry has a particular interpretation of music. Indeed "Psyche Rock" sounds like a Vitalic vibe, and some sounds are similar to "Rollin 'and Scratchin'" samples from Daft Punk. Simply stunned!
